Let's continue our video series with a focus on Internet of Things, innovative ideas with connected devices.
So in 2024, our work at KRUTSCH really revolved around the central theme of App Refresh. Fresh design, innovative ideas, a modern tech stack, a thoughtful UX approach. I want to talk for a minute about Owlcam. So, Owlcam is a security focused, AI driven dashcam with a broadband connected hardware platform and cloud services platform on the back end. Their mobile app was desperately in need of a complete refresh.
Getting to Work

So we went to work by looking at Owlcam competitors. We did kind of a heuristic review of their legacy app and some of their competitive apps. We looked at their platforms or features, and then we followed up with a round of qualitative user interviews of existing Owlcam customers to understand what security-minded customers are looking for from Owlcam, outside of improved stability from the current app.

And the legacy app presented a huge relapsing video loop which required users to endlessly scrub through the video to find highlights. So, we designed around two key concepts. One was break up driving trips into separate events, along with parked events like, say, somebody bumping into your car. I think there's an example over here on the screen showing that.

And then the second thing was allow the user to scrub the video of a driving event and then synchronize that location with an active map display.
For example, you observed an event like a car crash or whatever while driving, and you want to recall your location. You just scrub to that, right, that spot in the video and there it is on the map. Lots and lots of use cases for that one. Very exciting app to work on. I've spent the bulk of my career working on building front ends to embed in remote systems, and the complexity of Owlcam was sort of right up our alley.
